I can't stand to see you cry is Austin-born, New York-based Rahim Fortune’s second book, a culmination of the last five years of “Black love, photography, and history”, through an exploration of Texas and the people who are fixed within its complex landscape. Fortune analyzes relationships between family, friends and strangers, all caught in a flood of health and environmental issues while working to maintain grace. Through his biographical approach to photography, Fortune unpacks identity, community, and togetherness in the midst of a pandemic, civil unrest, a cross-country move, a career, and the loss of a parent. “I think the book is extremely hopeful in the sense that it is about self-love. I really do think it should be viewed in that way. There is hope and overcoming,” Fortune explains. I can’t stand to see you cry, published by Loose Joints in 2021, won the Rencontres d'Arles Louis Roederer Discovery Award in 2022 and was nominated for PhotoBook of the Year at the 2021 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards.
